1A Assessment Program for Mid-levels.

Phase 1A for Mid-levels consists of the following 5 activities that take place over one day:
  1. Intake Form and Professional Background Assessment (90 minutes):
A detailed intake form is completed at the beginning of the assessment. This form includes a comprehensive professional background of the Mid-Level Provider including all medical education. You will also be asked to complete a Continuing Education Information Form, Diagnostic Thinking Inventory, and the Computer Literacy Questionnaire. An interview is conducted to clarify all aspects of the Mid-Level’s professional background and training.

  2. Oral Clinical Examination (90 minutes):
The UCSD faculty assessor conducts an oral clinical examination of the CDCR Mid-Level Provider addressing 6-8 clinical scenarios which would reflect primary care in the prison setting. The problems would cover preventive, acute and chronic clinical assessment and patient management.
  3. Observed History and Physical Examination (90 minutes):
The UCSD faculty assessor observes the CDCR Mid-Level Provider perform a complete history and physical examination on a mock patient. This performance is evaluated using standard scoring forms. This part of the assessment is videotaped for later review if necessary. The CDCR Mid-Level Provider then writes a note of this patient evaluation which is reviewed by the faculty for completeness and accuracy.
  4. Written Examination for Clinical Knowledge Assessment (2.5 hours):
A multiple choice and clinical problem set written examination is administered to the CDCR Mid-Level Provider consisting of 150 questions. 80 of these questions are single answer multiple choice and 70 are based on written clinical scenarios. This examination is based on adult primary care for Mid-Level Providers.
  5. Exit Interview (30 minutes):
An exit interview is conducted with the CDCR Mid-Level Provider to review the experience during the assessment activities. Notes are kept to reflect the Mid-Level Providers experience with the assessment, including perceived strengths and weaknesses. Feedback is solicited from the CDCR Mid-Level Provider to improve the overall assessment program.
