Information and Instructions

The Quality Improvement in Correctional Medicine IA Program is a two-day assessment designed to thoroughly evaluate the healthcare professional’s general clinical knowledge and judgment. Components of the assessmentprogram include:

  • Assessment of Clinical Knowledge, Skill and Judgment. This assessment is conducted by a member of the QICM Faculty.
  • Chart review - The participant provides a random sample of redacted chart entries which are assessed for overall quality, organization, legibility, proper documentation, and billing/coding
  • A number of multiple-choice written exams covering ethics and communication, mechanisms of disease, pharmacotherapeutics and a subject exam covering either family medicine or internal medicine. This subject exam will be replaced by a women’s healthcare exam for those physicians employed at a women’s facility.
  • A computer simulation test where the participant manages cases to assess their clinical decision-making, general medicine knowledge, and patient-management skills
  • A computer test used to evaluate clinical decision-making and judgment
  • The participant is evaluated on their performance of a history and physical on a simulated patient
  • An exit interview

One of the examinations you will be asked to complete is a USMLE computer simulation test (PRIMUM) where the participant manages cases to assess clinical decision-making, general medicine knowledge and patient management skills. The enclosed CD provides you with orientation material for this test as well as practice cases.

The faculty, administration and staff of the UCSD QICM Program strive constantly to create a friendly, helpful, supportive and scholarly environment for all physicians utilizing its Program. All members of the QICM Faculty are active clinicians themselves, and perform their assessment and teaching functions in an unbiased and fair manner.
