Primary Care Education for Correctional Medicine Physicians

The QICM Primary Care Education Course is a 5-day small group (no more than 12 participants) course designed to help department of corrections physicians enhance their knowledge and skills in primary care medicine. This case based and highly interactive session covers the major topics of (Printable Agenda):

  • Prevention in Adults
  • Chronic Cardiovascular Disease and COPD
  • Headache, Head Injury, BPH and Infectious Issues
  • Hypertension and Heart Disease
  • Thyroid, Renal, and Liver Disease
  • Common Skin Disorders
  • Diabetes and Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Common Musculoskeletal Injuries and Arthritis
  • Neurological Problems, Medical Errors, and Prescribing
  • Chest Pain and Acute Heart Disease

                     

                     

Course Description:


This course will provide review and updated information on many of the common medical conditions that physicians practicing medicine in the California Department of Corrections encounter.

                     

Objectives:

  • To provide a basic education in primary care medicine to Department of Corrections physicians who wish to increase their knowledge and skills.
  • To improve the quality of care delivered in state prisons.
  • To provide a basis for ongoing primary care education in state prisons.
